Importance of perfume in Islam
Fragrances and perfumes are
worldly commodities and adornments. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah
be upon him) clearly stated that perfume is dear to him among the consumable
things of the world. On the authority of Anas bin Malek (RA), who narrated from
the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, that he said: “Beloved by
me in your world are: women, perfumes. And the coolness of my eyes is in
prayer.” (Sunan Nasa’i 3939)
Undoubtedly the fact is:
expensive perfumes smell better and last longer than cheap ones. For this
reason, buying expensive perfumes will not be considered a waste. However,
purchase of perfumes will be prohibited under the following conditions:
A. He does not have the money
to buy that perfume. Even if you have the money to borrow or buy it, if you buy
perfume with this money, it will cause loss to those who are required to bear
the cost.
b. If pride, arrogance and
bragging are desired by this fragrance.
c. Unnecessary over-buying.
On the authority of Umar
(RA), "If a person spends all his money in buying perfume, he is not a
spendthrift."
Undoubtedly, if a person is
rich and he buys expensive perfumes of good quality, it is not considered a
waste. Especially good quality perfumes last longer and smell better. And if it
is a middle class and poor class person: then for such a person buying this
kind of perfume will be considered a waste.
