Benefits of the six fasts of Shawwal

After Ramadan, we have two great actions. One of the great virtues is to observe the six nafl fasts in the month of Shawwal. We usually call it the six fasts. Then comes another great feat - Hajj. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said about the virtues of the six fasts –

من سام رمضان ثم أتباه ستا من شوال كصيام الدهر كله (م)سله (م)سله

This means that those who fast in Ramadan and then fast six times in the month of Shawwal must fast for the whole year.

The 6 fasts in the month of Shawwal mentioned here can be any time in the month of Shawwal. It can be six at once, it can be broken. But it's better to leave it broken. In this hadith it is said that if one fasts six times in the month of Shawwal after fasting in the month of Ramadan, it is good to fast for the whole year. Allah may have such an explanation that since each virtue is given at least 10 times, so the 30 fasts of Ramadan and the 8 fasts of Shawwal, if these 36 times are given 10 times, it will be 360 hours. In this way, if you fast six times with the fast of Ramadan, you will be able to fast for a whole year.

This is to prepare yourself mentally for fasting from now on. The mind must understand that if I can keep 30, then I can keep these 6. Although that fast is not obligatory, but it is obligatory. However, some supererogatory acts are kept along with all kinds of obligatory acts in Sharia, so if there is a mistake in the obligatory acts by this supererogatory act, it is fulfilled. For example, some sunnat nafl namas have been left along with the fard prayers, so if there is a mistake in the fard prayers, the sunnat nafl will replace that mistake.

For example, in addition to the obligatory prayers, some of the sunnat nafl prayers were omitted, so if there is an error in the obligatory prayers, the error can be removed by the sunnat nafl. Some of these supererogatory fasts have been omitted along with the obligatory fasts, so that if there is a defect in the obligatory fasts, that defect can be replaced by supererogatory fasts. In this way, some nafl amal is left along with every obligatory wajib amal, so that the fard defect is supplemented by nafl. If we think in this way, the importance of these nafls is not less, because the fard account must be given in full. If it is difficult to save oneself, if one is stuck in the field of resurrection due to a fault found in the fard, then all these nafl become a means of escape by filling the defect of the fard. So after Ramadan, one must mentally prepare for the six fasts of Shawwal. For all other amals, some extra nafl should be added to the fard, so that the nafl can fill in the errors of the fard. And who can guarantee that there has been no mistake in our duty? Therefore, it is necessary to perform nafl due to fard.
